One in two temporary workers from Ukraine can stay in Poland

Half of the temporary workers from Ukraine want to return to their homeland after the end of the war. At the same time, as many as 45% declare that for the time being they want to stay in Poland and see how the situation develops. Among their plans for the coming months are also learning the Polish language, finding an independent flat and bringing their immediate family to Poland. Those who are considering moving to a country other than Ukraine are thinking above all of Germany.

According to OTTO Work Force's latest report "How do Ukrainians view working and staying in Poland in 2022?", half of the surveyed temporary workers from Ukraine (49%) plan to return to their homeland after the end of the war. In contrast, 26% of respondents indicated that they have not yet made a decision on the subject, and 25% answered that they do not plan to return to Ukraine.

Tomasz Dudek:

"No one knows how long the war will last and under what conditions it will end, and it depends on what the citizens of Ukraine decide. Once the war is over, many of them will certainly return and get involved in rebuilding the country. However, the longer the conflict lasts, the more difficult it will be for refugees to return to Ukraine and leave their already arranged lives in Poland. Let us remember that the process of rebuilding Ukraine will be complex and many of its citizens will simply have nothing to return to".

Only one in five Ukranians plans to move west

In the first months of the war, it was assumed that for many Ukrainians Poland would only be a temporary place on their further journey to the west. It turns out, however, that Ukrainian citizens value the security they have found in Poland (45% of respondents) and only 22% of temporary workers indicated that they plan to leave Poland for a country other than Ukraine. Of those surveyed, 35% have not yet made a decision on the subject and as many as 44% do not envisage leaving Poland for a country other than Ukraine. In the group of those determined to leave Poland for another country, 3/4 of the respondents indicated Germany.

Plans for the coming months

2022 was a very difficult year for temporary workers from Ukraine, despite which many of them have settled in Poland, as evidenced by their plans for the coming months, such as learning the Polish language or wanting to bring other family members to Poland.

Tomasz Dudek:

"When asked about their plans for the coming months, our temporary workers most often answered that they wanted to wait in Poland and see how the situation in Ukraine would develop - 43% of the votes. The next most popular answers included learning the Polish language, finding an independent flat and bringing their immediate family to Poland. It can therefore be assumed that Ukrainian citizens are feeling more and more secure in Poland and will want to stay in our country for longer".
