Ukrainian citizens appreciate security in Poland, but worry about their family – the results of the eighth edition of OTTO Work Force's report "How Ukrainians evaluate work in Poland?"

Almost half of the surveyed temporary workers from Ukraine appreciate the security they feel in Poland. Nevertheless, in percentage terms, the number of people satisfied with working in Poland in 2022 was 79%, a decrease of 6 percentage points from the previous year. The majority of Ukrainian citizens are worried about their loved ones who have remained in the war zone. As many as 60% of the respondents indicated that separation from their families was the most difficult thing for them during their stay in Poland.

This year, due to the ongoing war, a great number of Ukrainian nationals came to Poland, but they were mainly women with children and elderly people. Thus, we were faced with a large structural mismatch between workers and vacancies, especially in the area of heavier work, which is usually done by men. Despite this, it is estimated that about 2/3 of Ukrainian refugees of working age took up employment in Poland.

Ukrainian citizens appreciate security in Poland

The annual survey, conducted by OTTO Work Force, showed that the main reason why Ukrainian citizens decided to work in Poland was higher wages. However, in the 2022 survey, for the first time, the highest number of indications was greater security – 45%. It was followed by higher wages (37%), the desire to provide a better life for the family (29%) and a better economic situation (28%).

Tomasz Dudek:

"Until now, the main reason why Ukrainian citizens took up work in Poland was higher earnings. In 2022, with the war going on in Ukraine, security has gained in importance and this reason was indicated by the most respondents – almost half. Higher wages were the second most frequently selected answer gaining 37%, a drop of 21 percentage points from 2021 and as much as 34 percentage points from 2020".

Number of Ukrainians satisfied with work in Poland has decreased

Since 2017, the downward trend in job satisfaction in Poland continued, at which time the indicator reached its peak (94%). Subsequently, in 2020 and 2021, we observed a significant increase in job satisfaction in our country, until 2022 when we are dealing with a decrease in this indicator by 6 percentage points compared to last year.

Tomasz Dudek:

"In 2022, 79% of respondents answered that they were satisfied with their job in Poland. Due to the war, Poland received a very large number of women from Ukraine, for whom there were not enough job offers on the market. We have also observed a large structural mismatch between employees and vacancies and this is probably the main reason for this year's decline in job satisfaction in Poland. We should also bear in mind the problem of high inflation and the consequent significant increase in the cost of living in Poland, which Ukrainian citizens coming to our country had to face".

Separation from family is the most difficult

2022 is a very difficult year for temporary workers from Ukraine staying in Poland. Only some of them came to Poland with their whole family. The majority of Ukrainian citizens are worried about their loved ones, as many as 60% of respondents indicated that the most difficult thing for them during their stay in Poland is separation from their family who stayed in Ukraine. For 35% of respondents, poor knowledge of the Polish language is also a major obstacle, and for 17% dealing with formalities and official matters in Poland.
